Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC (JANUARY 4, 2012) – Congressman Beto O’Rourke (TX-16) has been appointed to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs

“With more than 70,000 veterans who call El Paso home, I am humbled by the opportunity to fight for better service and improved accountability for these local heroes,” O’Rourke said, “Veterans’ issues are important to me and I will fight for them as they have for us.”

With Ft. Bliss being one of the largest military installations in the nation, there is an abundance of veterans’ who have chosen to make El Paso their home, and it is necessary that we are able to provide them with the level of services and benefits they need and deserve.  O’Rourke plans on initiating improvements with our current VA system and working to bridge the gap for veterans’ services that are currently lacking or not provided.

“In this role, I will focus on ensuring our local VA exceeds the needs of veterans by pushing for a new, full-service veteran’s hospital, training and education for middle-class jobs and a shelter for homeless veterans and their families, because no veteran deserves to be homeless. In addition, I will also push for expedited disability and benefits claims processing.” O’Rourke added, “These are the men and women who have put their lives on the line for this country and stood up for America when we needed it most. We owe them the best physical and mental care, the quickest response to their requests for help and the assurance that this country stands with them and their families.”

The Committee on Veterans’ Affairs is responsible for the oversight of veterans’ programs, analyzing current laws, and reporting bills and amendments to strengthen existing laws concerning veterans and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), including health care, disability and other benefit compensation, GI Bill education, job training, home loan guarantees, life insurance policies, and veterans’ cemeteries.
